KNIGHT'S STAR IN GOLD ENAMELLED WHITE AND BLUE. Without ribbon. Original red case gilded with irons, inside purple silk velvet and satin. In the center, radiating pastille representing the portrait of Saint Sylvester on an azure enamel background and surrounded by the legend SANCTVS.SILVESTER.PONT.MAX. On the reverse, date MDCCCXLI on an azure enamel background and surrounded by the legend GREGORIUS.XVI.RESTITVIT. On the lower arm, gold spur. (26,88 g) 51,45 mm and 69,15 with the ring of suspension. Superb. VATICAN - ORDER OF THE GOLDEN SPUR was founded on October 31, 1841 by Pope GREGOIRE XVI in honor of Pope Sylvester who had instituted the order of the golden spur in 336. Originally, Pope Sylvester instituted the Order of the Golden Spur which gradually underwent modifications. It became the Order of the Golden Spur and the Golden Militia in 1559 with Pius IV. This was suppressed in 1841 by Gregory XVI and replaced by the Order of Saint Sylvester and the Golden Spur.
