"It has been more than eight days, my good friend, since I have received any news from you, so I am going to scold you in turn, have you decided to go to Étoges [Louise's father's castle, in the Marne], I urge you not to stay there for long because of our children, you think that... our little Alfrede caught a fever there last year, and as soon as they are so well at Maison [Lannes owned the castle of Maisons, in the present-day township of Maisons-Laffitte] I think that your friend [Louise's father] is completely recovered, he would do well to spend several days at Maison and not to occupy himself with business while he is there. SINCE IT HAS BEEN WARM I HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER, I AM ONLY MISSING THE TRANQUILITY OF THE SOUL, I HAVE BEEN SICK TOO MUCH FOR THIS TO COME FROM A LONG TIME, I don't need to tell you, my dear Louise, to take good care of Napoleon's [their eldest son] education, besides the poor little child is so resounding, farewell, my dear Louise, give my love to the whole family... " EXHAUSTED BY THE RIGOURS OF THE WINTER CAMPAIGN IN POLAND AND BY HIS INJURY RECEIVED AT THE BATTLE OF PULTUSK, MARSHAL LANNES had been entrusted with the command of the reserve corps (he lived badly his distance from the emperor in the middle of the campaign) with the mission of covering the siege of Danzig led by Marshal Lefebvre, and had just taken part in the fight of Weichselmunde which allowed to push back a Russian expeditionary corps.
