Horace VERNET (Paris, 1789 - 1863) Young African in three-quarter bust to the right wearing a fez Oil on canvas Signed Horace Vernet center left 53,5 x 45,5 cm Provenance : Drouot, Compagnie Commissaires-Priseurs, June 2, 1993, n°48 Sotheby's New York, May 5, 1999, n°177 Renaud-Giquello & Associés, October 17, 2003, n°53; acquired by the father of the current owner during this sale Born into a dynasty of painters, Horace Vernet followed in the footsteps of his father Carle Vernet, a specialist in the representation of horsemen and genre scenes. He continued his training by observing the work of Théodore Géricault whom he met during his visits to the family studio. The discovery of Géricault's work contributed to the development of the romantic part of Vernet's work, which he really experienced during his stay in Algeria in 1833. There he painted the French armies and drew some rare bust portraits of the natives, of which our work is probably an example. Whether it is a portrait from life or a souvenir of a trip, our work is a formidable testimony of the artist's stay in the East. Official painter of the Second Empire, much appreciated by Louis-Philippe, Horace Vernet was called upon when the Versailles museum was created to paint the battles of the African Campaigns (Constantine room).
