Philippe Jacques de LOUTHERBOURG (Strasbourg, 1740- Chiswick, 1812)
Landscape with a shepherd playing a flashlight and a church on a hill
Oil on canvas
51 x 40,5 cm
Minor wear and some restorations.
Gilded wood frame.
Provenance:
- Collection of Édouard, duke of Treviso (1883-1946)
- By descent, private collection.
In a landscape inspired by Dutch art of the 17th century, Loutherbourg reproduces here a church similar to the one present in a drawing by the artist kept in Marseille at the Grobet-Labadié museum ("Paysage du sud de la France avec une église sur une hauteur", reproduced in the catalog raisonné p. 30, fig. 9). There is a second version of our painting kept in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (inv. 21169), reproduced in the catalog raisonné cat. 66, p. 209. We thank Mr Olivier Lefeuvre for confirming the authenticity of our painting.
