Antoine Jean GROS known as Baron GROS (Paris, 1771 - Meudon, 1835) King Charles X visiting the paintings of Gros at the dome of the Pantheon, November 3, 1824 Black stone and brown ink 25 x 35 cm Provenance: - Collection of Édouard, Duke of Treviso (1883-1946) - By descent, private collection. Our drawing is a preparation for the painting by Louis-Nicolas Lemasle (Paris, 1788 - 1876) kept at the Château de Versailles (inv. M 5842), on deposit at Compiègne, Musée du Château (C. 173). Bears an inscription by Lemasle in pen in a cartouche under the drawing: "Charles X saying to Mr Gros, When I write you now I will put to Mr Le Baron This sketch was made by the famous Gros, to facilitate the execution of the painting that I was commissioned by King Charles X, this painting was in Rambouillet in 1830. Later inscription, in graphite: "Drawing from the Hotel de Fersen at the corner of Fg St Honoré and the rue de Matignon. Purchased at the time of its demolition Feb. 5, 1925. 1925 " Pitting, freckles Preparatory to the painting of Louis-Nicolas Lemasle, our drawing is however not from his hand. It is a work of Baron Gros, who lent his drawing talents to the young artist, 17 years his junior. Thus, Lemasle will produce the painted work, to the glory of the monarchy, but also of the one he admires: the subject represents Charles X, accompanied by the Duke of Angouleme, visiting the dome of the Pantheon decorated with Gros' paintings. The few handwritten lines under the work confirm this identification, Lemasle gives thanks to Gros: "This sketch was made by the famous Gros, to facilitate the execution of the painting that I had ordered King Charles X, this painting was in Rambouillet in 1830."
