Jean-Baptiste Hilaire began his training at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. In 1776, he embarked with the Count of Choiseul Gouffier on the Atlante for a voyage to the Greek islands and the Orient. He drew views of the Ottoman Empire which were used for the engravings of the Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce, published in 1792.
