Pablo GARGALLO (1881-1934). Mask of Picasso - 1913. Proof in bronze with brown patina. Illegible inscription (probably founder's mark) on the back. H : 20,5 ; W : 19,5 ; D : 14,5 cm. Exhibition: The stone sculpture is kept at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona. Note: The Spanish sculptor Pablo Gargallo is considered one of the leading figures of modern sculpture in the first half of the 20th century. He trained in Barcelona where he frequented Pablo Picasso and the young artists of the café Els Quatre Gats. Pablo Gargallo frequented the Cubist movement. "Cubism, with its demands for solidity and density, strengthened his research, he did not adhere to the theory but to the spirit. His research on the work of metal, iron and copper, brings a real technical evolution and marks of its print the modern sculpture. This makes him "the father of cut-out sculpture, the first to understand how to convert the cubism of Picasso's paper collages and cardboard guitars into iron and copper".
