Bibliography
XLIV This large gilded wood console table, crowned with a Royal red marble top, belonged to Jean Bloch, a great collector of furniture and objets d'art from the "Grand Siècle" (fig. 1). Its molded belt, enriched with openwork acanthus scrolls, is stamped with a cartouche decorated with a trophy of objects representing a quiver and a torch in saltire, crossed by an arrow. It rests on four feet in volutes with plant scrolls, garnished with grains in rosary. The legs are joined by a curved strut whose central terrace is decorated with a shell.
The quality of the sculpture, evident in the scrolls that intertwine in the moldings of the belt, links our console to the great repertoire of tables in the king's apartments on which the jewels of the cabinet of medals in Versailles are placed (engraved by Pierre
Lepautre) or to the models produced by the Society of Ornamentalists sculptors for the King's Buildings, in particular those made by Jules Degoullons (1671-1738) for the intendant of finance
Malon de Bercy (fig. 2).
