APOLLINAIRE Guillaume (Wilhelm Apollinaris de Kostrowitzky, said) [Rome, 1880 - Paris, 1918], French poet.
Autograph letter signed, addressed to José Théry. [Paris, September 15, 1911], stamped envelope enclosed in registered mail.
On September 7, 1911, accused of complicity in the theft of the Mona Lisa because one of his acquaintances had stolen statuettes from the Louvre, he was imprisoned for a week in the Santé prison. This letter is dated 2 days after his release from prison.
"My dear defender and friend
Here is a letter from Piéret sent to Marie [Laurencin]
I entrust it to you, keep it preciously, it could be useful to you and shows, I believe my good faith, to speak about it obviously only at the very end.
See what a fool this boy is.
I do not speak about it yet to Me Fraysse, you will do as you want.
Your grateful friend who misses you very much.
Guillaume Apollinaire
To reassure me, please acknowledge my receipt.
Follows 4 autographed lines signed by Marie Laurencin:
"My best regards
Master defender and friend of Guillaume.
Marie Laurencin."
Attached is the issue of the Excelsior with the headline "The Louvre has lost the Mona Lisa" (August 26, 1911).
