L.A.S. "F. Liszt," Weymar March 6, 1853, [to Gustav SCHMIDT]; 4 pages in-8 filled with tight handwriting; in German. Long letter of advice on how to conduct Berlioz's Roméo et Juliette, and the Wagner week in Weimar. [Gustav SCHMIDT (1816-1882) was Kapellmeister in Frankfurt since 1851] Liszt sends his correspondent the score of BERLIOZ's symphony Romeo and Juliet, as well as a pair of antique cymbals needed for Queen Mab. It will be useful to have the full title of the second part printed in the program (Second Part. - Romeo alone - Concert and Ball. Grand Fête chez Capulet) as Berlioz has indicated in the score. It would not be superfluous to insert in the concert program, as a commentary on the Queen Mab Scherzo, the story of Queen Mab (as written in the German text of the score) or better still the quotation from Shakespeare. He recommends having the strings and winds rehearsed separately several times. The Mab Fairy is a particularly difficult number. When conducting it, he likes to use the Beethovenian method of beating 4 bars in 4 beats as in C (rythmo di 4° battute, as in the Scherzo of the 9th Symphony) - in this way, one gains in calmness without harming precision... He advises placing the antique cymbals close to the music stand - and Berlioz generally wants the organ points to last a very long time. Then he mentions the project of performing Der Lustige Rath [by J. Hoven, pseudonym of Johann Vesque von Püttligen] in Frankfurt in the summer; he also talks about Raff's opera [König Alfred], and asks Schmidt if he has finished his opera: if he does not wish to give the premiere in Frankfurt, he puts the Weimar stage at his disposal... He asks that the score and parts of Romeo and Juliet be sent back to him immediately after the performance, as both numbers will probably be performed again in Weimar during Easter week, in honor of HM the King of Saxony... He adds that the three performances of WAGNER's operas, The Flying Dutchman, Tannhauser and Lohengrin, went off very satisfactorily this week, as had been announced. Yesterday, Lohengrin decided the Wagner Week, which will be epoch-making for Weimar. Zweckdienlich wird es sein wenn Sie den vollständigen Titel des zweiten Theils (Second Part. - Romeo alone - Concert and Ball. Grand Fête chez Capulet) so wie ihn Berlioz in der Partitur angegegeben in dem Programm abdrucken laßen. Als Commentar zu dem Scherzo Fee Mab dürfte auch entweder die Erzählung der Fee Mab, (wie Sie im deutschen Text der Partitur vorsteht) oder besser das Shakespearische Citat, auf Ihrem Conzert Programm nicht überflüssig erscheinen. Wiederholt empfehle ich Ihnen separat Proben der Streich und Blas Instrumente. Die Fee Mab ist insbesondere eine schwierige Nummer. Beim Dirigiren derselben behelfe ich mich gerne hie und da mit der Beethoven'schen Methode in dem ich 4 Takte als 4 Viertel schlage wie bei dem C Takt (rythmo di 4° battute, wie im Scherzo der 9ten Sinfonie) - dadurch gewinn ich mehr Ruhe ohne die Präcision am mindesten zu beeinträchtigen. Versuchen Sie es gelegentlich und ich glaube Sie werden mir nicht unrecht geben. Die antiken Cymbeln rathe ich Ihnen nahe an Ihr Pult zu stellen - und die Fermaten wünscht Berlioz in der Regel sehr lange. Daß Sie auf den lustigen Rath für diesen Sommer reflektieren ist mir sehr angenehm zu vernehmen. [...] Von Raffs Oper habe ich Ihnen bloß im Vergleich mit der Kittel'schen gesprochen ohne alle Absicht, Sie etwa mit Partituren zu bombardieren. [...] What is the position with your opera? Are you therefore committed? - If you want to be sure that the work will not be performed in Frankfurt at the beginning, then you have to be prepared for it at , and I don't need any more Wert-Versicherung, because you will be able to rely on my goodwill and friendship. Schließlich muß ich Sie noch bitten mir Partitur und Stimmen von Romeo und Julia sogleich nach Ihrer Aufführung wieder return zu senden da die beiden Nummern wahrscheinlich auch wieder hier in der Osterwoche aufgeführt werden, und zwar zu Ehren S.M. des Königs von Sachsen deßen Besuch in Weimar zur Osterwoche angesagt ist [...] Die 3 Vorstellungen der Wagner'schen Opern Flieg: Holl: - Tannhauser und Lohengrin sind so wie sie angesagt wurden in dieser Woche ganz befriedigend von sich gegangen. Gestern beschloß Lohengrin diese für Wey[mar] epochemachende Wagner-Woche."
