[DESFONTAINES (Pierre-François Guyot). The new Gulliver, or Voyage of John Gulliver, son of Captain Gulliver. Translated from an English manuscript by M. L.D.F. In Paris, by Vve Clouzier and F. Le Breton, 1730. Le Breton, 1730, in-12, [11] f., 272 p., [2] f., 19th c. midnight blue half-basin, smooth spine, title and gilt fillets (light wetness in margin of first ff., tear without marg. loss p.199). Counterfeit, at the date of the original edition, of this sequel given to Gulliver's Travels. It is the work of the Abbé Desfontaines, a native of Rouen (1685-1745), who first translated Swift's famous work into French. A polemicist and critic, opposed to Voltaire, he was notably the director of the Journal des savants. Handwritten bookplate "Arnault, 1760" on the last page of the preface.
