Willering Epko (1928-2015)
Known as the "Dutch magician of colour", Epko was supported by the most important international galleries. Of particular note is the involvement of the Felix Vercel Gallery in New York, where the paintings presented here come from.
Collectors and critics around the world were seduced by his shimmering palette and his figurative compositions with their naive charm.
Initially attracted by the colourful abstractions of
Maria Helena Viera Da Silva (1908-1992) and
Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955), he blossomed into a figurative artist following in the footsteps of Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and Henri Matisse (1869-1954).
He was awarded five prizes between 1958 and 1960, including the Prix des Collectionneurs (Paris, 1960) and the
Popular vote (New York ? 1960). He also won the Lefranc, Pacquement and Othon Friesz prizes.
His works are now kept at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris as well as in the museums of
Genoa, Munich, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
