The Oise was one of the preferred destinations of the painter and his family for nearly thirty years, before they settled permanently in the South of France in 1924.
Angevin by birth, Henri Lebasque married an Alsatian woman, Catherine Fischer, in 1895. The couple settled in Paris but travelled regularly. Their stays in Pierrefonds, then at the Vieux-Moulin and Saint-Pierre ponds in the forest of Compiègne, had a lasting effect on Lebasque's work. Here, he gives us a transfigured vision of these landscapes, served by shimmering colours laid down in broad, divided brushstrokes.
The tree that hides the forest here shelters under its foliage the high peppered walls of the castle of Pierrefonds (Fig. 1).
