Important Impressionist drawings and paintings from the Estate of Madame Julien Rouart, Ferri and Beaussant-Lefèvre sale catalogue, Paris, Drouot-Montaigne, 27 November 1997, lot 11, reproduced
After the Impressionist Exhibition of 25 May 1888, Berthe Morisot left for the South of France with her husband, Eugène Manet, and their daughter Julie.
They rented an Italian-style house for the winter, the Villa Ratti, in Cimiez, in the hills above Nice (fig. 1).
Under his brush, the aloes in the garden seem to dance. Their giant-like appearance contrasts with the delicate female figure that can be seen on the doorway. This figure does not appear in the preliminary pastel study (Fig. 2).
Perhaps this is our artist's daughter, Julie Manet, who was very well suited to the Mediterranean climate, as
Berthe Morisot confided in a letter to her friend Claude
Monet on 7 March 1889 (Archives Claude Monet sale, Artcurial, 13/12/2006, lot 218).
