L.A.S. "Beethoven", [Wien 23 March 1812], to Franz RETTICH; 1 page small in-4 (16 x 16,2 cm); in German; in a burgundy morocco slipcase, lined with green morocco and white moiré silk with an engraved portrait of
Beethoven.
000 /
On his two Overtures König Stephan and The Ruins of Athens.
Franz RETTICH (1768-1818) was secretary at the Superior Court of Justice of Vienna, and father of the actor Karl Rettich and the Viennese correspondent of his friend Joseph von VARENA, music lover and patron of the arts
Graz, who had entrusted him with the dispatch of the packages of Beethoven's music for a charity concert that he was organizing in Graz on March 29, 1812
"Es dürfen bis Morgen Abend wohl sicher noch die 2 Ouverturen folgen, und so wird Ihnen geholfen, jedoch mit den äußersten
Anstrengungen. Schreiben Sie nur gefälligst, daß man in Gratz sicher alles Erwartete erhalte jedoch muß man sich im Voraus gefaßt machen zur Probe, da die Sachen mit dem Postwagen zwar nicht zu spaät, aber doch auch nur eben zur rechten Zeit ankommen werden.
On the back, autograph note signed by Rettich with the date of receipt of this note, March 23.
The 2 Openings should probably reach him the next evening, but at the cost of the greatest efforts. He would like to know if the friends in Graz have received everything they expected. But they must make all the arrangements for the rehearsal in advance, since the works will arrive by mail coach, not too late, it is true, but just in time.
[The two Overtures König Stephan (op. 117) and The Ruins of Athens (op. 113) were originally composed to accompany Kotzebue's dramas intended for the inauguration of the new Theatre in Pesth, on 9 February 1812].
