December
Canvas
40 x 32,5 cm
Provenance:
Anonymous sale, Monaco, Christie's, 7 December 1990, no. 341, reproduced.
Exhibition:
Three Masters of French Rococo BOUCHER FRAGONARD LANCRET, Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama, 1990, no. 47, reproduced.
A key artist of 18th century French painting, Nicolas Lancret first apprenticed with Claude Gillot; it was in his studio that he met and became friends with Antoine Watteau.
Winter is a well-known subject for Nicolas Lancret, who produced another painting on the same subject for the Cabinet du Roi at the Château de la Muette, now in the Louvre (see G. Wildenstein, Lancret, Paris, 1921, fig.13).
On a frozen lake, in front of a stone pontoon, three figures are enjoying the winter sun: while one young man is readjusting his ice skates, the other two are enjoying sledging.
Professor Mary Taverner-Holmes has kindly indicated that she places this work around 1720, and considers it to be autograph.
