Dogon heddle pulley, Mali
H. 9 13/16 in
Provenance :
- Former Schelcher Beyer collection,
- Former Pierre Langlois collection
Settled from the 15th century onwards in the south of Mali, the Dogon live in the cliffs of Bandiagara, east of the Niger River.
This pulley is a fine example of the art of this region. Delicately decorated with geometric patterns on its base, it is surmounted by a finely sculpted effigy. Standing with his arms at his sides, the figure stands in a hieratic position. The angular face is structured around the central ridge of the long, blunt nose.
