The Warrior's Welcome, Europe, ca. 1770-1780
Folded fan, the skin sheet, mounted in English, and painted in gouache of a soldier in armor being welcomed by his dog, a symbol of loyalty. His companions stand back as women step forward from a palace. One of them opens her arms while others play music. Perhaps an illustration of Cleopatra and Mark Antony's love affairs?
Reverse: basket of flowers and shepherd's crook.
Engraved white mother-of-pearl, silvered and gilded mount decorated with flaming hearts and two doves on a cloud.
H.t. 28,5 cm H.f. 13,7 cm (missing rim, accidents, stains)
