William II (1792-1849) was the second King of the Netherlands, Duke of Limburg and Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1840 to 1849.
At the time of our painting, the artist was living in Brussels. He is linked to Romanticism with his landscapes with subjective perception which provoked the displeasure of the Dutch art critics of his time.
