Allan Hughan (1834-1883) and Jean-François Pierson (1818-1892)
SOUVENIRS OF THE VOYAGE OF THE MISSION OF EXPLORATION IN NEW CALEDONIA, 1870-1871
Italian-style album, full red chagrin, gilt title on the first cover, 36 albumen prints, about 15?x?20 cm, mounted on blue cardboard sheets, typographical captions in French.
The banker André Marchand, before founding the colonial bank whose bankruptcy in 1877 was to seriously disrupt the economic life of New Caledonia, organized a study trip there from which he brought back the idea of this album, published after the Commune by François Pierson, 41 rue Taitbout, brother of the famous Louis, of Mayer & Pierson.
The prints were made in Paris, for the most part from the views of New Caledonia by local photographer Allan Hughan. Similar album in the collections of the BnF.
