Götz van Berlichingen writing his memoirs
About 1840-42
Pencil drawing.
Monogrammed E. D.

Delacroix illustrates Goethe's play "Götz von Berlichingen" (1773) with a series of lithographs. Arrested by order of Maximilian I, the noble mercenary Götz takes advantage of his stay in prison to write his memoirs, together with his wife.
At least two other drawings with variants for this lithograph are known: one is in the Metropolitan (N°1975.1.614), the other is a tracing that was sold on 18 November 2005 (Tajan, Hôtel Drouot, n°26, reproduced). Delacroix also painted the subject in 1849 (private collection)
