A humanist born near Rome in the early 16th century, Palearius taught Latin and Greek in Siena, Lucca and Milan. Among his various works, the De animorum immortalitate, a philosophical poem of Neoplatonic inspiration, is by far the most important. Suspected of being in favour of Luther's reformation, Palearius was persecuted by the Inquisition, which he described as a dagger aimed at the throats of literary men, accused of heresy, then executed and delivered to the flames in 1566
Interesting contemporary binding decorated with rolls bearing the effigies of Erasmus, Luther, Huss and Melanchthon, heralds of Protestantism.
Numerous old handwritten ex-libris on the title, and wet stamp: Bibliothèque Dr. Thierry Étampes. The first 2 endpapers are covered with handwritten annotations.
