Very rare gothic printing of Toulouse, issued from the presses of Jean de Guerlins, typographer active in the city since 1519 according to Claudin, Histoire de l'imprimerie en France, t. IV, p 36.
Unique edition of this speech on Lucan's Pharsalus delivered in Toulouse by the author, who was then about twenty years old.
Thomas Guichard, born at the very end of the 15th century and who died of the plague around 1526 in Viterbo, was a knight of the Order of St John of Jerusalem and deputy of the grand master Philippe de Villiers-de-L'Isle-Adam to Clement VII. We owe him an account of the siege and conquest of Rhodes by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522-1523 (cf. Sommi Picenardi, Itinéraire d'un chevalier de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem dans l'île de Rhodes, 1900, p. 130).
