A great success of scandal of the novel where naturalism clashes with the world of black magic.
It was banned from all railway station stalls by the Bibliothèque des Chemins de Fer. Durtal reflects the tormented evolution that led Huysmans to convert to Catholicism. The hero is introduced to adultery with the hysterical wife of a Catholic writer and to Satanism with an excommunicated canon who feeds hosts to his white mice.
A very good copy.
