Born in 1839 in Tuscany, Michele Gherardi moved to Paris in 1853 to begin his apprenticeship with the moulder Giuseppe Barsugli. From 1855, Barsugli's workshop was located at 45 rue Monsieur-le-Prince. When he died in 1860, the workshop was taken over by his widow and Michele Gherardi. Adapted to academic study, a large number of his casts came from Barsugli's collection. From 1875 the premises are put in the name of Pouzadoux, associate of Adolphe Geoffroy Dechaume and First Moulder of the Museum of Comparative Sculpture
