Akan head
Ghana
Terracotta
H. 17.5 cm
Funerary head representing a male face with a goatee. Scarifications decorate the temples, the eyes are half closed, the eyebrows finely sculpted. The upper part of the skull is missing.
The face is beautifully modelled, combining interiority and serenity. These effigies modelled in clay are typical of the southern Akan peoples and date from the 15th to 18th centuries. Placed on altars or on the tombs of important members of the community, these heads commemorated the memory of the chief and were the object of regular libations.
