Lobi statuette
Burkina Faso
Wood
H. 27 cm
Beautiful statue of a standing female figure, arms wide open, chest marked, face finely detailed. The object is covered with a ritual crusty patina.
Explanations differ as to the precise meaning of these statuettes with outstretched arms, known as tiepouo. They could be sculpted following the death of a member of the community, the open arms symbolizing rejection and prevention in the face of looming death.
