109. BONAPARTE (Joseph). 2 autograph letters signed " Joseph (Cte de Survilliers) ", addressed to the countess Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély, Laure Guesnon de Bonneuil. 1833. - London, 20 July 1833. "M. DANT[A]N QUE VOUS AVEZ M'ADRESSE A BEAUCOUP DE TALENT, IL A FAIT MON BUSTE ET CELUI DE MA FILLE, vous devés avoir reçu le premier que j'ai prié l'artiste de vous envoyer en mon nom puisque vous voulez encore bien se souvenir de moi, dans un temps ou tant d'autres nous oublient. My daughter also intends to send you Mr. Dant[o]n's work for which she posed. I beg you, madam, not to doubt my old and constant friendship, I will consider myself lucky the day I can express it to you in person and convince you of its full extent... ". - November 11, 1833. "I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY FOR YOU TO JUDGE MY OLD CURRENT FIGURE BY THE CARICATURE THAT WAS DONE HERE BY MR. DANTAN, whom you sent to me. I have no doubt that he did his best, but he was, as far as he can tell, dominated by his genius, which leads him to caricature, a genre in which he excels. He had a full and complete success here. I beg you to accept an engraving which I hope you will be more satisfied with. M. Patorni [the lawyer François-Marie Patorni, businessman of the Bonaparte family] who will give it to you, will never tell you enough how grateful I am for the feelings you are not afraid to show for me, and how much I would like to be able to express my gratitude to you personally..."
