I learned... the disaster which accompanied your return to France: I wish, Madame, that your family, your country, could console you for the terrible loss you have made. You have already shown so much courage, that it will not have deserted you in this important circumstance. Please, Madame, do not doubt the feelings that you so well deserve and accept my homage and my friendship... From 1815 to 1832, Joseph Bonaparte lived in Philadelphia under the name of Count de Survilliers, maintaining good relations with the American authorities. His property at Point Breeze became the rallying point for Bonapartists in the United States. He then moved to England and returned to the United States from 1837 to 1839. In 1841, he was allowed to stay in Florence.
