The title of "Catholic Kings" was granted by Pope Alexander VI to the kings of Spain Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. Ferdinand was the son of John II, King of Aragon and Navarre, and Joan, daughter of Frederick Henriquez. In 1479, on the death of his father, he inherited Aragon. His union with Isabella, Queen of Castile, was the cause of the unification of the two largest kingdoms of Spain engaged in the crusade against the Moors. In 1482, Ferdinand and Isabella attacked Granada, the last Moorish state in Spain. Granada capitulated ten years later on January 2, 1492. Many Jews and Muslims were expelled. From their union was born Jeanne la Folle who married Philippe le Beau. Isabella would have financed the voyages of Christopher Columbus who landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492.
