Biography :
Jacques-Louis de La Hamayde de Saint-Ange known as SAINT-ANGE, born in Paris on April 28, 1780 and died in the same city on May 3, 1860, was a French draughtsman and painter.
After studying with the architect Antoine Vaudoyer, Saint-Ange joined the architects Percier and Fontaine. He was then employed by Alexandre de Gisors and Louis-Pierre Baltard, assisting the latter in writing his book on Parisian monuments.
The architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, inspector of the Imperial Furniture, entrusted him with "creating drawings for the various factories in charge of the administration". He then began a long career as a painter, producing drawings in the neoclassical style1 for the making of tapestries and carpets for the imperial and then royal manufactures after the fall of Napoleon I. He was appointed draughtsman at the Imperial Furniture in 1810, which became the Crown Furniture Guard in 1816, before becoming draughtsman of the bedroom of Monsieur (the Count of Artois, the future Charles X) on 26 January 1819. In this position he produced, among other things, the designs for the choir carpet of the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, commissioned on 15 September 18252. He also made the fabrics for the furniture of the King's room in the Tuileries Palace, commissioned by Louis XVIII in 1817. Saint-Ange died on May 3, 1860, at his Paris home at 19, cour du Commerce.
