LARGE CHRIST France, 16th century White oak Presented in its old condition - Misses H. 136 cm, W. 34 cm This large crucified Christ, with a carefully marked anatomy, presents a beautiful face with fine features. He wears a small moustache with curly ends and a fine pointed beard that elegantly emphasizes his jaw, following the hair fashion of the Renaissance in France. Our Christ has kept a dignified air despite the general state of slackness of his body. Unlike the one in the Vieux-Champagne town hall (fig. 1), he is no longer struggling. His eyelids are closed. His head has fallen back between his two arms nailed high. The hair held back has left the nape of his neck free on the left side, while a strand is unravelling under his right armpit. The perizonium has unraveled, barely held together by the rope around his hips...
