SMALL RENAISSANCE CABINET Île-de-France, second half of the 16th century, circa 1560-1580 Blond walnut Total height 176.5 cm Upper body : H. 88 cm, W. 99.5 cm, D. 38.5 cm Lower body : H. 87 cm, W. 111 cm, D. 47.5 cm This two-part recessed cabinet has a beautiful architectural structure, punctuated by six pilasters decorated with pennants on the upper part and with fruit falls on the lower part, between which are inserted the molded panel doors typical of the furniture of the Henry II period. The architrave that crowns the upper part of the mantel is adorned with a frieze of acanthus scrolls centered on a chubby cherub carved in high relief. At the corners, scrolled brackets support the cornice. The whole rests on a molded base that rests on the equally carved belt. The lower part is topped by a belt that opens to two drawers adorned with oval wrought iron catches and decorated with vases with large foliage. Three winged putti heads protrude from the center and the ends. The whole rests on a moulded base supported by four flattened ball feet. "Two bodies" were still made in this spirit at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century in various French regions (fig. 1). Ours, which is characterized by a varied and careful decoration, is a beautiful model from the Ile-de-France region from the years 1560-1580
