SET OF SIX EMBROIDERS France, 16th century Wool and silk
H. 111 cm ; W. 104 cm
These six haloed figures decorated a dalmatic. They are currently presented in two registers, alternating a man with a woman at the top and a woman with a man at the bottom. They are shown standing under an archway surmounted by a tympanum with arabesques on a red background. The chequered floor deepens the space.
In the upper register, Saint James the Greater opens the ball with his book and his pilgrim's staff, followed by Saint Lucy who holds the cup in which her eyes rest. The third holds a monkey on a leash.
In the lower register, St. John the Baptist presents the Lamb of God on the open Book. He is surrounded by two richly adorned holy women.
