Vase for heating jiuzun wine
Vietnam / China, Hán-Việt period, 1st-3rd century
Bronze with archaeological patina, H. 19 cm
This tripod is often mistakenly referred to as a lian (liễn in Vietnamese), a cosmetic box of similar shape. However, it is in fact a vase intended for heating wine, which the Chinese call wen jiuzun. In the Han tombs of Lạch Trường or Đông Sơn, these vessels are placed in the antechamber, next to the erbei wine cups, the hu vases and other objects intended for the presentation of sacrificial dishes.
Cylindrical in shape, it has a domed lid, resting on three small bear-like feet and a decoration of raised bands with two taotie mask-like grips with rings.
