Very rare spearheads with giao long (dragon-crocodile) decoration
Vietnam, Đông Sơn culture, 3°-1° century BCE,
Bronze with archaeological patina, L. 15.5 cm
On the socket, two long giao or dragon-crocodile appear on each side. This animal, which populated the waterways of North Vietnam, was feared and venerated by the Dongsonians. According to the legend, King Hùng advised his subjects to tattoo a crocodile on their body if they had to venture on the rivers. A spear point with two longitudinal slits on each side of the midrib is attached to it.
