Very rare axe with double symmetrical cutting edge
and decorated with figures
Vietnam, Đông Sơn culture, 3°-1° century BCE,
Bronze with archaeological patina, 7.5 x 5.5 cm
The symmetrical-edged bronze axe is the earliest form derived from the Neolithic quadrangular stone axes. The earliest bronze examples date back to the Đồng Đậu culture (1500-1000 BCE) and become more widespread under Đông Sơn. It is decorated with an orchestra of three seated musicians playing mouth organs and wearing feather headdresses. Representations of birdmen are rare on arms.
