Set of three polished stone axes Vietnam, 4000-2000 BCE Stone, L. 16.5 / 13 / 10.5 cm Quadrangular axes (or adzes), characteristic of the Aus-tronesian culture, figured in sites dating from the Late Neolithic (such as Dậu Dương, 4000 BCE.) to the Gò Bông (or late Phùng Nguyên, 2000 BCE) culture. On the other hand, tenon-finger axes, specific to the Austroasiatic culture, are present in sites dating to 3000 BCE. such as Mai Pha, Bau Tro or the Hạ Long culture. As Vietnam is the meeting point of these peoples, both lithic tools are naturally found in sites dating to the Neolithic final with with a greater proportion of quadrangular axes (for example at Lũng Hòa where 2 tenon axes were found for 115 quadrangular and only three tenon axes at Phùng Nguyên). On the other hand, they are in the majority on the island sites of the Ha Long culture.
