With its in-line six-cylinder engine, it renewed the tradition of German luxury cars. Designated with the number "220" in reference to its 2.2-litre capacity, it took the aesthetics of the 170S and added new streamlined headlights. Available in four body styles, saloon, convertible A, convertible B and coupé A, the W187 sold 18,514 units, of which only 1,278 were convertible A and 997 convertible B. Sold from 1951 to 1955, it was one of the most expensive cars of its time before being replaced by the new "Ponton" in 1954. Apart from the coupe, the A convertible was the most sought-after version of the Mercedes-Benz W187, as its lines were much slimmer and more elegant than the B convertible, whose rear windows disrupted the design. Capable of reaching 145 kilometres per hour, the 220 had 79 horsepower and four gears, making it a very modern car to drive for its time and, above all, relatively efficient compared to the competition.
