French school of the late 18th century Portrait of Torquato Tasso, known as Le Tasse Bust in white marble veined with grey Height. 59 cm Torquato Tasso, known in French as Le Tasse (in Italian, il Tasso), was an Italian poet, born in 1544 in Sorrento and died in 1595 in Rome. He is best known for his epic poem, Jerusalem Delivered, 1580, in which he depicts, in the manner of chivalry novels, the battles that pitted Christians against Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the siege of Jerusalem. Suffering from a mental illness since the age of 30, he died just as the Pope was about to crown him "King of Poets". Until the beginning of the 19th century, Tasso was one of the most widely read poets in Europe. Our sculpture is reminiscent of the one by Gilles-Lambert Godecharle (1750 - 1835), which is now kept in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and was formerly kept in the park of Wespelaer Castle near Leuven.
