Alecos FASSIANOS (born in 1935) The return of Ulysses to his homeland. Oil on canvas, signed and dated "1970 "lower right. Label "Galerie Paul Facchetti, 17 rue de Lille, Paris, Alecos Fassianos, The return of Ulysses, 130 x 160 (100F), 1970". 160 x 130 cm. Some slight dents and lifts, slight scratches, small stains on the side. In the 1960s, Alecos Fassianos studied Fine Arts in Athens and Paris before turning to his own unprecedented pictorial research and fixing his very personal style. Fassianos likes to treat contemporary subjects in the manner of mythological ones, creating figures with large and massive forms, like modern Greek kouroi transposed into the world of the 1970s. Both hieratic and supple, these figures are characteristic of his style and take place in compositions with titles that often refer to the great myths of ancient Greece. Here, "The Return of Ulysses" from Homer's Odyssey evokes the reunion between the king of Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope. The two central figures take place inside an apartment whose windows open onto a modern city, and are treated in a monochrome almost in the manner of the red figures of the ancient vases. This beautiful work also has a notable provenance as it has an old label from the Galerie Paul Facchetti (Paris) which has exhibited Fassianos several times (in 1969 and 1971 in Paris, and in 1971 and 1973 in Zurich), as well as a label from the Galerie Krisal (Geneva).
