Grenoble 1968. Opening ceremony © L'Équipe 6 February 1968. "The first great success: the opening ceremony presided over by General de Gaulle", declared "L'Équipe". The French did not want to miss their reunion with the Olympic festival, which the country had not organised since 1924. Some 60,000 bundled-up spectators watched 37 nations go through the gates of the Belledonne, Vercors and Oisans massifs. The France of the "Trente Glorieuses" hoped for a triumphant fortnight.
