Personal altar piece "Shango". The prominent double axe overhangs the kneeling female figure. Yoruba, Nigeria. Wear / Fat libation plate. Rare. 1st quarter of the 20th century. H 25 cm including base X 11 cm.
Shango is a feared deity, because he is unpredictable, but he is also venerated because he brings beneficial rains to the crops and also gives children to women.
