Zoomorphic head / fragment of sculpture or pottery. Djenne, Mali. Terracotta. 15th/16th century, subject to analysis. 8 X 8 cm Founded at the beginning of the 10th century by the Soninke, Djenne, a religious city whose human occupation dates back to 250 BC, was the center of a civilization considered, at present, as one of the oldest in Africa. Provenance: collection of Dr Smits, Belgium. A certificate from M Humblet accompanies this work.
