Manuel ROSENTHAL (1904-2003). Autograph musical manuscript, Cantate pour le Temps de la Nativité, 1943-1945; [2]-178 pages 26.5 x 34 cm in an oblong volume bound in blue waxed cloth.
Orchestral score of this Cantata composed during the Occupation, and given its first performance on April 21, 1946 at the Concerts Colonne under the direction of Paul Paray.
It is written for solo soprano, mixed choir and small orchestra composed of 2 flutes, oboe (and English horn), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, horn, timpani, drums (2), and strings. It lasts about 34 minutes, and is dedicated to Louis Beydts.
It consists of ten parts, which Rosenthal has listed on the title page: I Bethlehem (chorus, text from Romancero de Champagne, anonymous author); II Angelic Salutation (solo soprano, Ave Maria from the liturgy); III Salutation des bêtes (chorus) (ancient text, adapted from Provençal by Roland-Manuel); IV Interlude (orchestra); V Salutation of the shepherds (choir, text by Jehan Daniel, a 16th century Noelist); VI Prayer to the Blessed Virgin (solo soprano, Inviolata from the liturgy); VII Salutation of the Magi (orchestra); VIII The Flight into Egypt (orchestra); IX Prayer for Peace (solo soprano, antiphon from the liturgy); x Gloria (choir, ordinary of the mass). For II, VI and IX, Rosenthal uses his Three Prayers of 1941.
The manuscript is written in black ink on 24-line oblong paper; it is signed at the end and dated "orchestration completed in Paris on 18 January 1945"; it served as a conductor for the premiere of the work, and bears annotations in red and blue pencils.
Attached is the signed autograph manuscript of the vocal-piano version, signed and dated at the end "Paris 17 July 1944". (69 pages in title folder 35.5 x 27.5 cm), parcel with numerous scratch corrections and crossed-out measurements, which was used for the engraving of the edition. Plus string material engraved on tracing paper.
