Called to Versailles, he worked for Madame de Pompadour, then for Madame du Barry and became the Court's portraitist between the aging Nattier and Madame Vigée-Lebrun. He is one of the last artists of the century to give portraiture a certain sumptuousness while showing concern for its individuality.
