Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734-1789) after L'histoire et la Mansuétude Engraving taken from the Eighth book of the Nouvelle Iconologie Historique ou Attributs Hiéroglyphiques by Delafosse, published in 1768. Height 40,7 cm - Width 25,9 cm (small accidents) Delafosse, architect and ornamentalist, contributed a lot to the formation of the Louis XVI style and to the first neo-classical style through the publication of his collections. The work constitutes an ornamental repertoire for fountains, pyramids, fireplaces, door tops, borders, medallions, trophies, vases, tomb friezes, clocks, etc. Delafosse's style uses the symbolic force of allegory by using an iconic language that is often very fantastical.
