Commander-in-chief in Brittany (1753), he was accused of arbitrary acts by the parliament of Rennes and his attorney general La Chalotais (1765), then by the parliament of Paris. In 1768, he had to resign his office. But in 1770 the proceedings against him were annulled by Louis XV. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1771) and War (1774), he was disgraced by Louis XVI (1774).
