WAGHENAER, L. J. Verthoninghe van zee Cuften van Bretaignen ... Tusschen S: Malo en Rouscou. Leiden, Plantin, 1583/1585. Col. Paper a little yellowed, restoration at bottom of central fold. Text on verso appears transparent. 328 x 504 mm. Rare nautical chart (6) of the Breton coast from St. Malo to Roscoff, oriented north downwards, with text in German, published in one of the first editions of Waghenaer's maritime atlas "Spiegel der Zeevaerdt" and engraved by Baptist and Johannes van Deutecom. It is very difficult to list the different states because of the numerous editions in different languages languages with the constant concern to correct according to the latest findings of the navigators. What strikes in such a map, it is well at the same time the maritime side but also the the decorative side. It is decorated with a Renaissance title cartouche, a scale, a compass rose, several ships and sea monsters.v Waghenaer's personal experiences as a pilot along the European coasts were used to compile the Spiegel der Zeevaerdt, the first edition of which was published in Dutch in Leiden in 1584/85 by Plantin.
