WAGHENAER, L. J. De Zee Custe, met de Englande van Bretaignen, tuschenn Blavet en Picqueliers (Sud Bretagne). Leiden, 1584/1585. Col. Coloured copy. Framed. 329 x 510 mm. Detailed description of the Breton coast from Vannes to St. Hilaire-de-Riez (from Blavet then Port-Louis to Picquelier (Noirmoutier)), also shows Belle-Île. Marine map dated 1583, decorated with a Renaissance title cartouche, a compass rose, several ships and sea monsters. Rare map in 2nd state from the Latin edition of the Atlas "Spieghel der Zeevaerdt" published in Leiden in 1584/1585 and engraved by Johannes van Deutecom. With this map, no surprise to locate and find the north, called here Septentrion. New very decorative map. On the sea side, three ships, two sea monsters, a compass rose, the depths depths, a beautiful cartouche dated 1583 with the name of the engraver: Joannes a Doetinchem fecit. On the land side, four profiles with Dutch text, a cartouche at the top right with the right with the name of the author: Lucas Jansz Waghenaer. The importance of the rivers is, as is often the case exaggerated. Hills, trees, three sheep, a cow. A remarkable absence: the peninsula of Quiberon, whereas we observe a very large peninsula for Noumonstier (Noirmoutier). 1st state : Dutch edition. Vannes is badly located, which is not new. 2nd state: Latin edition Latin edition. Text of the profiles with Latin translation, preceded by the letters A, B, C, D. The cartouche, on the top right, has been translated, as well as the name of the author The cartouche at the top right has been translated, as well as the name of the author: Lucas loès Aurigarius Inuentor. Banks in the estuaries of the Loire and Vilaine rivers; Cardinal was added with rocks between Cardinal and Baes (Dumet island, off the Vilaine). Quimperley was added south of Vannes, still poorly located. In the lower left corner, appears the number 4 or 45. Finally, Hispanica was added on the scale while the 2nd one was translated. Note also that a river connecting the sea to Berneuf Chasteau (Bourgneuf-en-Retz) has now disappeared, as well as sandbanks in the bay of Bourgneu f. In summary, a careful examination shows so many small differences that one may think to be dealing with a second copper; it is sufficient to observe the sea monsters, but also the Waghenaer used his personal experience as a pilot along the European coast to compile the Spiegel der Zeevaerdt, the first edition of which was published in Dutch in Leiden in 1584/85 by the Plantin company. § Copy reproduced in Ancient Seascapes of Brittany 1580-1800, Pl.
